The boy was among dozens of children who tried their hand at vegetable gardening this summer at the Decatur YMCA under a special partnership involving the Y's Camp Sokkia, Decatur Is Growing Gardeners, or DIGG, and the American Cancer Society. Among the lessons taught were the five food groups, how many servings of fruits and vegetables people should eat every day and how much people should exercise for good health. First DIGG volunteers built four raised garden beds measuring three by 12 feet between the Y and the new Kiwanis Pavilion that serves as Camp Sokkia's headquarters. Crops included cucumbers, marigolds, onions, peanuts, peppers, radishes, sunflowers and tomatoes, and the cancer society provided a $42,150 grant to support the project.
